Matt Riddle Out Of UFC 91

by Scott on October 31st, 2008

It seems a string of injuries has been keeping the cards on MMA fights constantly changing as of late. Diego Sanchez was supposed to see Thiago Alves in UFC 90, but injured a rib and was replaced by Josh Coscheck.

This time around it’s The Ultimate Fighter 7 contestant Matthew Riddle. You probably remember Riddle as the kid that always had a smile on his face. Riddle actually made his debut on the UFC on The Ultimate Fighter Finale where he fought (and won by decision) fellow welterweight TUF 7 cast mate, Dante Rivera.

Riddle was set to face Ryan Thomas on the under-card at UFC 91 but due to a recent knee injury and will have to sit out for 6 to 8 weeks until he recovers. A replacement for riddle has not been named yet.

You may remember his TUF7 Debut fight (video above) where he fought Dan Simmler and knocked him out in the second round. Riddle got a lot of sh*t on the Internet for the 2 or 3 hits after the knockout because it was kind of obvious that Dan was out after the first shot caught in right on the bottom. However I think Herb Dean took too much time to stop the fight. Fighters are told a lot of the time to keep going until the ref stops the fight. Sometimes the refs give the downed fighter a second or two to recover, but there was no recovering from this one and Dean being the experienced red that he is should have jumped in before the 2 and third hit to the downed Simmler. Fighters also have a lot of adrenaline pumping during a fight and it can get the best of them just as it does with cops you see in the videos, beating on criminals, but a lot of those cops go way overboard. Simmler suffered a broken jaw in three places and a grade 3 concussion.

After season 7 of The Ultimate Fighter, Riddle relocated from Pennsylvania to Arizona to train at Arizona Combat Sports.
