The Ultimate Fighter 8.07 Recap

by Scott on October 30th, 2008

tuf-season-8.jpgEpisode 7 of The Ultimate Fighter 8 did not hold much drama as the last 4 episodes and I think that actually made it more interesting to watch. Seriously, how many times can you watch Junie Browning get drunk, talk trash and then put on a mediocre performance. Hopefully he’s learned his lesson and start thinking with a clear mind and training more seriously.

After seeing how gassed-out Browning got during his match, Frank Mir decided to put his team through an intense cardio/endurance training session and brought in a special trainer. Rafael Alejarra, a conditioning trainer who also trains Wanderlai Silva. They had to perform fast paced, intense workouts while decreasing the amount of oxygen they were taking in by way of breathing through a snorkel. If you have ever breather through a snorkel while actually snorkeling, it’s not very difficult but still doesn’t feel totally comfortable. Imagine breathing through a snorkel while running at an almost sprinting pace for 5 minutes on a treadmill.

The next fight to be picked is controlled by Team Mir and Mir Picks  Vinny Magalhaes to fight Jules Brunchez. We didn’t get to see much of Brunches game when he won his way on the show, because he won very quickly by a rear naked choke on his opponent. Afterward he bragged about not even throwing a punch, to which I though was incredibly stupid when your entire game is on foot and you get lucky with a choke.

Vinny on the other hand is more of a ground, Jui Jitsu fighter. His stand-up is not very well developed yet, but he’s learning fast. His ground submissions are really good.

There was a bit of drama between Noguiera and Magalhaes during the show because of some things that Vinny said about Nogueira about his grappling, but I’m not going to get in to that. Let’s get to the match.

There was a lot of talk from Brunchez, saying that Vinny had no stand up, but when Vinny came out Jules looked terrified of him. Jules tried throwing some punches as did Vinny, but vinny looked like the aggressor. Vinny through some leg and high kicks that connected but didn’t do much to Brunchez. Brunchez may have connected with one or two punches but it wasn’t enough to make a difference. The two clinched and Vinny had Brunchez in a Mui Thai clinch and took Brunchez to the ground, quickly starting to work a submission. Vinny had Brunchez in full guard and worked his right leg around Brunchez’ right arm, over his face and submitted Brunchez by an arm-bar.

It was kind of strange seeing Vinny work that arm-bar the way he did, but it was pretty brilliant exactly how he did it. Vinny Magalhaes win keeps Team Mir in control of the fights and put them one over Team Nogueiro at 3-2. This is how the roster now looks.

Team Mir
Krzysztof Soszynski
Vinny Magalhaes 1-0
Elliot Marshall 1-0
Tom Lawlor – Eliminated  by Ryan Bader
Junie Browning 1-0
Shane Nelson – Eliminated by Efrain Escudero
Dave Kaplan
George Roop

Team Nogueira
Ryan Bader 1-0
Shane Primm – Eliminated by Elliot Marshall
Kyle Kingsbury
Jules Bruchez – Eliminated by Vinny Magalhaes
Phillipe Nover
Efrain Escudero 1-0
John Polakowski
Roli Delgado – Eliminated by Junie Browning

Next week will pit either Team Mir’s George Roop or Dave Kaplan against Team Nogueira’s Phillipe Nover or John Polakowski. Should be an interesting match-up either way.
