ProElite Closes Doors, UFC Has No Interest In Kimbo Slice

by Scott on October 28th, 2008

Dana White 2_nc After a shocking ending to October 4ths Elite XC:Heat fight between Kimbo Slice and Seth Petruzelli and one last show on Showtime on October 10th, ProElite, the owners of Elite XC have seized operations as of October 20th and plans on filing for bankruptcy protection. So where does it leave the fighters? Still bound to their contracts, unfortunately. ProElite may try to sell of fighter contracts to other fight circuits, but nothing has been finalized or proposed yet.

After a successful PPV at UFC 90, Dana White expressed his disinterest in Kimbo Slice, Elite XC overpaid main draw. White made the following statement after UFC 90.:

“If he really wants to get into the UFC and he wants to fight, he should get on ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’” White said. “What has he done, other than getting ten million hits on YouTube, what’s the guy done to deserve to be in the UFC? Nothing. I don’t consider him a real athlete or anything. He won’t win ‘The Ultimate Fighter.’ The offer’s out there if he wants to take it. He won’t win it.”

Kimbo Slice_nc Dana has every right to say that, in my opinion. There are a slew of talented fighters out there that have worked hard, making their way through the ranks. Fighters that deserve a shot more than some Viral-video, Youtube fighter. Many said from the get-go that he was not a real MMA fighter and couldn’t hang with a real MMA fighter. I think whether it was Ken Shamrock or Seth Petruzelli in there, Slice would have lost. The only thing he has got really going for him is a street fighting, stand up skills and the fact that he comes in fast and attempts to overwhelm his opponents from the start. I think if it went to the ground Shamrock or Petruzelli would have submitted him pretty quickly.

Gina Carano_nc As far as EliteXC’s female star, Gina Carano, White says there is just not enough other female fighters out there…

“I think Gina Carano is a talented fighter, I think she’s a star,” White said. “She should have been the main event of that night, or Jake Shields. My thing with women fighting is that there’s just not enough good women out there to create a whole division. Could I do some one off fights here and there, yeah, but that’s not really what we do.”

It is a shame because Gina is a great fighter. I think a lot of people would like to see some girl-on-girl action in the…, wait, that doesn’t sound right. I mean some female fighters in the UFC. Not only is Gina a beautiful woman, but she knows how to pick apart her opponents and win a fight.

As for the rest of the Elite XC fighters, we’ll just have to wait and see. Let’s hope they don’t get screwed by ProElite.

The guy is a joke as a fighter and that embarrassing upset exposed it. I hope he kept some money, else it’s back to YouTube.

I hope so too, Brian. He was paid half a million for that last fight…that he lost. Sadly Seth Petruzelli only won about 50k.

There was something fishy about that upset with Slice. It was a real disappointing fight and I was pissed when it was over and done. There is only one thing about Kimbo that you can say in a positive manner when it comes to UFC. The guy has made a name for himself. Let him go into UFC and get his name knocked out a couple times.

Yeah, something was surely strange about that fight. He has made a name for himself. Now it’s a huge over-rated name. I mean I wouldn’t want to fight him, but he fits in that category of Tank Abbot where he may be winning fights but when matched up against more technical fighters (Kimbo is more technical than Abbot ever was) I don’t think he has a chance. Put him up against fighters like Randy Couture, Anderson Silva, Chuck Liddell, even UFC newcomer Brock Lesnar and he doesn’t have a snowballs chance in hell. I could name a load of other fighters as well. Those are just a few off the top of my head.

I’m starting to think the same thing with the money-matches that have been happening quite a bit as of late in the ufc
