What’s In Store For Houston Alexander?

by Scott on September 19th, 2008

With his loss to Eric "Red" Schafer on Wednesday’s Fight Night, people are wondering what Houston Alexander’s future in the UFC looks like.

Houston exploded into the UFC when he dominated Keith Gardine last year at UFC 71 and then won again at UFC 75 against Alessio Sakara. A lot of people thought he was unstoppable…that is until UFC 78 when he lost to Thiago Silva. His next loss was to James Irvin who knocked out Alexander in an amazing 8 seconds with a superman punch.

Going into his match with Schafer, Alexander said he was a more rounded fighter. We’ve known his ground game and ground defense is weak, so you would think that he would have worked on this much more before the fight. Schafer is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, so you know Houston probably wanted to keep the fight as a stand up/ground and pound. Schafer caught Alexander in an arm triangle and was forced to tap in his own hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.

Dana White was quoted on Yahoo! saying: "He desperately needs a win," UFC president Dana White said in an article on Yahoo! Sports. "Another loss and he’s going to have to go out and start working his way back up to the UFC."

So what now for Houston Alexander? Will he have to head back to the the smaller independent circuits and work his way back up? Or will Dana give him a second chance? We’ll have to wait and see.
