The Ultimate Fighter Season Premiere Recap
In case you missed last nights Season Premiere of The Ultimate Fighter 8 here is the breakdown of the first 8 fights that took place. 4 Light-heavyweights and 4 Lightweights. It started off in the usual fashion as Dana White comes out to announce the usual. Just as he starts talking, Lightweight Phillipe Novar faints citing the Nevada heat as the culprit. Phillipe recovers and they get down to business and then introduce the coaches. You probably already know the coaches, Frank Mir and the current Heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira. Dana announces that weigh-ins will be in 24 hours and fights begin in 48.
Light-heavyweight hopeful, Jason Guida (Brother of Clay Guida) weighed in at 217 before the official weigh in and started taking action to cut weight. He lost 10 pounds but was going through a tough time with cramping and became severely dehydrated. He was still 1 pound over at the official weigh-in and the athletic commission said he could not safely lose anymore weight. He was eliminated and sent to the hospital for treatment for his dehydration. Honestly he looked ad if he was in terrible shape. You’d think that coming in to The Ultimate Fighter, you would try to be in the best shape of your life, but hell, people make mistakes. Due to his disqualification Mike Stewart was brought in to fight. Everyone else weighed in as they were supposed to and the fighting began.
Guida’s replacement, Mike Stewart fought and lost to light-heavyweight Krzysztof Soszynski by TKO. Krzysztof just dominated Stewart from the beginning with heavy lefts and rights.
Lightweights Fernando Bernstein lost to Dave Kaplan by rear naked choke in the first round. Dave Kaplan makes it very clear before the fight that he’s all about fighting for the money and that’s it. Dave Kaplan’s stand up game looks a bit sloppy and it doesn’t look very effective. However he showed a little skill on the ground.
The next Lightweight fight between Phillipe Novar and Joe Duarte was very boring. There was a lot of Muay Tai clinching going on during this entire fight. Duarte took a knee to the groin in the first but recovered quickly. Novar won in the second round by rear naked choke.
Light-heavyweight Jules Bruchez won by rear naked choke over Eric Magee by rear naked choke. Proud over his win and bragging that he didn’t throw one punch. Perhaps he doesn’t have much of a stand up game and he’s more of a wrestler. If he wants to compete, he’s going to have to have a good stand up game to compete against the likes of Krzysztof Soszynski. We’ll see what his stand up looks like in the coming weeks.
Light Heavyweights Vinny Magalhaes took on the the brother of undefeated UFC fighter Rashad Evans. Chris Evans started out strong and both fighters looked pretty good. Chris Evans took a hard kick to the left side of his rib cage and said he couldn’t continue after the first round. He may have cracked some ribs. Vinny Magalhaes moves on by TKO.
Light-heavyweight Antwaiin Britt won by decision over Ryan Jimmo. Both fighters were throwing some heavy punches and a lot of feet stomping going on.
Lightweights Brian McLaughlin took on Brandon Garner and won by disqualification when he took a knee to the head while he was on the ground. Garner didn’t mean to throw throw the knee while he was down, but McLaughlin could not continue. Dana decided to put McLaughlin through. I’m not sure if McLaughlin would have won this fight. He was throwing some wild overhands and in the short time they fought, It was hard to tell who would have won this fight.
The last fight was a lightweight fight between Junie Browning, an almost albino looking dude from Kentucky and Jose Aguillar out of New Mexico. Dana talks about how good Browning is and Jose Aguillar compares himself to Napolian, Alexander the Great and Hitler. Saying he belongs up there on that level, “I’m straight up criminal, dog” He stated. Browning pretty much dominated the fight. Aguillar tried getting Browning in a few unsuccessful submissions, while Junie was just beating on him and defending everything Aguillar threw at him with great skill. The round ended and Aguillar said “I’m done.” and quit. Junie wins by TKO. Honestly I was glad to see Aguillar go because It would have made for an annoying season of The Ultimate Fighter, having to hear this dude’s mouth.
So there you have it. 4 lightweights and 4 light-heavyweights moving in to the house. Next week we’ll see the other 16 fighters go at it for a chance to make it into the house. So far the ones that really stood out to me were Light-Heavyweight Krzysztof Soszynski and Lightweight Junie Browning.
