HBO’s Night of the Bulldog: Gutsy Angulo

by Michael Sedor on May 18th, 2008

Gutsy Alfredo Angulo

Alfredo Angulo vs. Richar Gutierrez
HBO’s Night of the Bulldog continues with 2004 Mexican Olympian Alfredo Angulo. He approaches the ring with MMA star Kimbo Slice. Angulo’s robe and T-shirt carry a stately pit bull profile and he’s wearing a dog collar emblazoned with a sparkly El Perro (the dog).

Unlike the first fight it’s quickly evident that both fighters fall into Ann Wolfe’s definition of bulldog. The 154 pounders trade blows and look good in a very even first round. Angulo settles down late in the second, finds his path and establishes dominance in the third. He spreads his targets throughout Gutierrez’ body throwing a lot a close range punches at an alarming rate. Angulo continues his barrage through the fourth. He now looks very comfortable.

But one punch can change everything. Gutierrez, who had looked sullen, tired, and frustrated between rounds, lands a stunning left hand uppercut as the fifth begins. Angulo is staggering and Gutierrez rushes toward the shaken fighter to take advantage. Gutierrez’ urgent look and impatient punches say “I need to do this now.” But Angulo steels himself, regains his balance, ably parries Gutierrez’ wild blows, ducks out of danger, and gathers his energy.

As the round continues Gutierrez still smells blood. It is a wrong assumption. Angulo hurts him with a big right hand to the head and proceeds to clinically connect with dozens of clean, powerful shots. Gutierrez is wobbly, disoriented and in a bad way. Angulo is having his way and the referee stops the fight even though Gutierrez does not go down.

The stoppage seems to come a little soon but Angulo was clearly the better fighter. Angulo’s fifth round was incredibly gutsy. He was hurt and had the wherewithal to not only gather himself but also win outright. This won’t be the last time we’ll see Angulo on HBO. He is now 12-0 while Gutierrez drops to 24-2.
