Regal Crowned King of the Ring on Raw

by Kris on April 22nd, 2008

Though the tournament had hype the participants, and eventual winner, of the WWE’s King of the Ring tournament left much to be desired. Many felt that King of the Ring had massive potential this time around, and in my eyes the concept does still have its merits, but when William Regal, the Raw GM and rare wrestler these days, is crowned King it’s quite obsious something is amiss but that was the cast this week. To little fanfare Regal captured the crown and not much else on Monday night.

In all honesty I thoroughly enjoyed the presidential match storyline they promoted. It’s reminiscent of a lot of similar lines in the past but I felt the over the top characters made it the most memorable match of the night.

The wrap up - Raw failed on so many levels this week and King of the Ring really fell flat. Raw needs a storyline pronto, though I like the direction of Michaels-Batista its reach is limited, and I think a title change is needed this weekend at Backlash to give Raw a spark heading into summer.

Here’s the full results:

  • Chris Jericho def. MVP (1st Round Match)
  • CM Punk def. Matt Hardy (1st Round Match)
  • Finlay def. The Great Khali (Disqualification) (1st Round Match)
  • William Regal def. Hornswoggle (1st Round Match)
  • CM Punk def. Chris Jericho (Semifinal Match)
  • William Regal def. Finlay (Semifinal Match)
  • William Regal def. CM Punk (Finals Match)
  • Carlito def. Hardcore Holly
  • Sen. Hillary Clinton vs. Sen. Barack Obama (No contest)
  • Randy Orton, JBL, Edge and Chavo Guerrero def. Triple H, John Cena, Kane and Undertaker (Eight-Man Tag Team Match)

1 opinion for Regal Crowned King of the Ring on Raw

I too thought the King of the Ring disappointed but, despite myself, really enjoyed the Obama-Clinton fight. Maybe it’s because I live in Pennsylvania and have been pummeled with ads and news for the past two months but it was great and a little cathartic to see them attack each other.

It was the best Celebrity Death Match ever and much better political satire than Saturday Night Live has shown in a while. The rest of the night, however, was pretty boring; the crowd even seemed dead.
