New Women’s Champion Crowned on Raw

by Kris on April 15th, 2008

Mickie James reclaimed the WWE Women’s Championship last night on Raw with a win over Beth Phoenix. Expect the pair to face off at Backlash in a rematch. It’s a welcome change for the Women’s division which has stagnated over the last half-year while Phoenix held the title. Sometimes I think long reigns are okay but in general, especially in the Women’s division and ECW, I like quicker title changes so I’m welcoming this one with open arms.

After being met with sweet chin music on Raw, Chris Jericho begged his way into being the special guest referee of HBK vs. Batista at Backlash. Jericho later defeated Umaga on Raw.

Santino Marella and Carlito defeated Brian London and Paul Kendrick to become the top contenders for Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhode’s tag team titles.

Cryme Tyme’s return push continues as JTG defeated Trevor Murdoch in one-on-one action.

England-natives found mixed success in London on Monday. William Regal was defeated by Randy Orton while Paul Burchill topped Jim Duggan.

JBL laid out Orton and Triple H as Raw concluded with Clothelines from Hell. Right now Layfield is the weakest of the main event opponents in the Backlash Fatal Four Way so it makes sense for him to have a dominant performance. Cena did not appear on Raw.

Next week will be a three-hour Raw from Europe and the King of the Ring will return for one night only. Participants in the tournament are expected to be Chris Jericho, Umaga, Shawn Michaels, CM Punk, Batista, Big Show, Triple H, and MVP.

I too was pretty happy Beth Phoenix lost. She’s no fun at all. It was strange to see a women’s match as the top highlight in a RAW show but somehow Mickie James’ sincere joy at winning really won me over.

I’m actually excited for tonight’s King of the Ring, much more excited than I am for the Backlash PPV. I hope it lives up to my expectations.

Same here. Backlash has the potential to be pretty decent (Michaels-Batista is far and away the best match in my eyes) but KOTR could start a good new storyline.
