This weeks Raw fell totally flat in my eyes. The Show-Mayweather angle looked genius when it was originally introduced but now that the $20 million payday has been revealed Mayweather’s performance just hasn’t been that good at all. Given how much he’s set to make for this promo he could at least show up in person for the Raw shows because if he just phones in every week this is going to be disastrous. It can still be salvaged, however WWE needs to turn this around soon.
The whole Big Show taking on a “fighter” was a bit ridiculous. First it was announced as a “mixed martial arts exhibition” match which could have been okay but they matched him up with someone who is Mayweather’s size and build, said pinfalls counted which essentially made this just another wrestling match, then had the “pro-boxer” who participated in the fight wear 16oz. boxing gloves while Show wore nothing on his hands. Perhaps it was supposed to be knock on MMA but in my eyes it turned out about as bad as possible. Not only was the match terrible but the rehearsed verbal sparring afterwards was even worse. Both kept repeating the same thing and nothing new was really offered up. Compared to last years Donal Trump angle (despite the known outcome) this one doesn’t even rank.
Raw did come through with a triple threat manager scenario where John Cena, Randy Orton, and Triple H will each be the Raw GM for the night. While I like the idea I think Cena should have really been more involved throughout the entire show versus just booking a couple matches but the idea was decent enough and should improve as Orton and Triple H get to control the brand.
Next week’s Raw cannot be much worse but it should be pretty decent overall. It’s being billed as “Wrestlemania Rewind Night” and all of the matches on the show will be rematches from past Wrestlemanias. It’s a tri-branded show meaning we will likely see most of the top stars from the company on Monday Night but the WWE needs to convince a lot of people, including myself, that this years Wrestlemania is going to be anything special.
