Boxing: Klitschko Tops Ibragimov
Wladimir Klitschko unanimously defeated Sultan Ibragimov on Saturday at Madison Sqaure Garden in New York City. With the win Klitschko unified the IBF and WBO titles and stands atop the splintered heavyweight division that is now moving towards unification. Though the fight fizzled Klitschko looked the better of the pair in securing cards of 119-110, 118-110, and 117-111. Klitschko’s next opponent remains undecided as the other top heavyweight title holders, Oleg Maskaev and Ruslan Chagaev, both have upcoming fights scheduled and will not be available for a potential fight until later this year.
John Duddy was also victorious Saturday on the undercard of Ibragimov-Klitschko but the win appears to have cost Duddy a shot at Kelly Pavlik and his world titles. His showing was less than impressive and he sustained several major cuts in the majority decision win over Walid Smichet. A good performance was supposed to lock up the June 7th bout in New York but instead his title shot is likely on hold and Pavlik will instead face off with another opponent that hasn’t yet been determined.
