Jab and Grapple - Boxing and Wrestling News and Analysis

Why I Love Fight Sports

by Kris on January 7th, 2008

I’ve been blogging on Jab and Grapple for over a yea but I never really reflected on why I love fight sports. Wrestling and MMA were first for me closely followed by boxing but I’ve never taken the time to consider just why. I think the reasons are many but I think it comes down to athleticism, technique, entertainment, and a dash of primal instinct.

No matter the fight sport the competitors are in top shape for their respected field and can put on a show. Sure some are better than others but they’re dedicating their bodies to the sport and I have the utmost respect for that. On top of their athleticism, the technique they employ is simply amazing. Whether it’s top rope moves in wrestling, the ability to mix kickboxing, jiu jitsu, judo, boxing, and wrestling in MMA, or the jabs, uppercuts, overhands, crosses, and hooks in boxing the techniques are down right impressive.

The ability to mix in entertainment is also key. To be a successful boxer, wrestler, or fighter you can be athletic and execute technique but you will not receive a push if you don’t have the ability to bring entertainment into the mix as well.

Even with all the above the one unique element fight sports presents over other sports is primal. As long as there’s been humans there’s been fighting and fight sports turn this primal instinct into an entertaining sport I’ve come to love.
