David Diaz Retains Lightweight Title
David Diaz defeated Erik Morales last night to retain the WBC Lightweight Championship. Diaz, a member of the 1996 US Olympic Team, is a four-time Chicago Gold Gloves winner as well as a three-time National Gold Gloves winner. After holding a 175-16 amateur record Diaz is 32-1-1 in his professional career.
After the loss Erik Morales announced his retirement. The former IBF, WBC, and WBO champion announced during the post-fight press conference that he was done boxing professionally (at least for now). He currently has a 48-6record with 34 wins by KO.
The bout was held in front of 9,735 fans at the Allstate Arena in Chicago.

Morales gave it his best shot. He is one of my favorite fighters. I think he made the right decision to retire and I hope he stays retired. He has contributed a great deal to boxing with his battles against Barrera and Pacquiao. He should not gamble with his health because he has taken a lot of punishment in his boxing career.
