Injury Updates: Carlito, Joey Mercury, and MVP

by Kris on December 19th, 2006

Carlito sustained a cut to his head at last nights Raw and he required several stitches to close up the wound. He was injured when he accidentally ran into a handheld WWE camera while attacking Chris Masters. He continued to fight and was treated backstage during Raw. In all likelihood WWE will post some sort of media showing Carlito being stitched up as has been their tradition in the past for injuries like this. Sort of drums up the toughness of the performers and the sport giving it a bit more cred.

Joey Mercury suffered a severe head injury, a broken nose and a possibly fractured frontal bone, and severe lacerations around his left eye after a botched “see-saw” ladder move by Jeff Hardy. When the move was completed Mercury’s head was too close to the ladder and he was hit square in the face. He immediately began pouring blood and was taken out of the match. On WWE.com late that night, WWE doctor Ferdinand Rios stated that there are concerns of possible brain damage, and that he will likely need reconstructive surgery and up to two months of recovery time.In an interview conducted by WWE.com, Mercury states “I’ve shattered my nose around the bridge area, have four fractures on the inside of my nose; I have 5 stitches on the inside of my nose and my cheek and 15 stitches on the outside of my nose and cheek. My left eye is swollen shut and I have continual internal bleeding from my nose and my eye.” The length of time Mercury will miss depends upon the severity of the injury after the swelling subsides and further tests can be performed. If plastic surgery is needed he is likely to miss up to 2 months.

Montel Vontavious Porter, or MVP, was first believed to have only suffered first degree burns in his loss to Kane in an inferno match. Now, according to WWE.com, MVP remains in the Richmond Burn Unit to be treated for an infection and blistering. No timetable for a return is set although more information should be known at this weeks Smackdown!.
