Thinking about Mixed Martial Arts

by Ron on August 10th, 2006

Mixed Martial Arts is nothing new to me. One of my classmates back in college used to try out for the URCC (Universal Reality Combat Championship), our local version of UFC/Pride many times, so I have a bit of an idea of what MMA is really all about.

Like I said in my previous entry, MMA is a growing sport which tries to incorporate the different aspects of martial arts like Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai, and others.

The sport is gaining popularity which can be seen with the growing number of schools that teach different MMA styles. Here in the Philippines, there are local versions of Jiu-Jitsu which is called Dumog. Our local version of Kendo is called Arnis while Muay Thai is called Yaw Yan. It’s all basically the same but the local ones just have few modifications to the original style.

What makes it even more interesting is that you should be knowledgeable in different fighting arts that involves striking, grappling, and submissions. Different fighting styles have their own respective expertise so one style might have the advantage when it comes to striking but maybe on the disadvantage when it comes to submissions and takedowns.

I have thoughts of getting involved in MMA, not actually fighting in the URCC, but learning one style just for the heck of it. I’ve tried boxing before so I hope training in a new style would add some skills, not that I have any to begin with.

I was searching around for some martial arts related sites, and came across yours. Since it had alot of good info, I figured I’de ask you - The reason I
was searching is because I just picked up this new domain Combative.org
and I’m fresh out of ideas about what to do with it. Any suggestions?

Hey Jon, this is a much older post that I didn’t write but I would love to tackle so ideas for your site. I am unsure if you are more interested in making a useful site, a profitable site, or a combination of the two but if you could tell me a little bit about what you want to do with it I would definitely be able to offer some suggestions.
