Ortiz shocks Shamrock in UFC 61

by Ron on July 12th, 2006

The main event that everyone is looking forward to in UFC 61 is the rematch of Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock. There is a history of bad blood between them and both of them know it.

Ortiz and Shamrock first faced each other in 2003 inside the octagon where Ortiz won. They had some words towards each other before the fight that initiated the bad blood.

It continued in the Reality Show called “The Ultimate Fighter” that shows Ortiz’s team versus Shamrock’s team with fights on a per week basis.

Now Shamrock wants some of Ortiz.

Too bad the match was ended early not by Ortiz OR Shamrock but by the referee.

In the usual style that we’ve seen from Ortiz, he immediately threw down Shamrock and hit him with some punches and elbows that forced the referee to stop the fight. As usual, Ortiz had his patented move in which he pretends to dig a grave which irritated Shamrock that caused him to charge towards Ortiz but the guards stopped him.

The crowd booed. Shamrock looked unhurt and still raring to go. Just like in any sport, you have to hand it to the referees. They have some good calls. They have some bad calls. You can just compare this to the NBA Finals in which the referee called a bunch of fouls on Wade. It’s also like the World Cup in which the referee gave a red card to Zidane in the dying secondsĀ of an overtime match.

What can you do? Nothing. Just sit back, relax, and try not to kill someone.

[…] The early stoppage due to the swollen eye definitely added some spice to the fight. The first fight, in my opinion, was dead even up to the referee stoppage. As you know, I am fond of just letting fights and games continue without any referee interference. Both fighters are warriors so he should’ve allowed them to continue box. […]
