Jab and Grapple - Boxing and Wrestling News and Analysis

Mosley vs. Vargas (Final)

by Sean on February 26th, 2006

Well here it is the day after the “Sugar” Shane Mosley vs. “Ferocious” Fernando Vargas fight and I am still rocked by the end results. I have to thank my children (that includes you too Jamiah) and 2 of their friends Dajuan (hope I spelled it right) & Andrew (a little boxing head too) for watching and keeping my company during the fight. Conversation was very interesting) Also big shoutout to Main Events and Golden Boy Promotions for putting on a good event. See Vargas below:

This what Vargas looked like after the fight. As for what I saw in this fight…

I will give Mosley the first 3 rounds because he definately had the jab working and it took Vargas until the forth round to find a way around the jab. But Mosley was persistent in applying the jab as you can see from the picture above. The process began in the second round. You could see the knot building up over his eye but not one time did he really appeared to be hurt. After the fourth round there were some very good exchanges.

When it came to a toe-to-toe punchout I give the to Vargas. He was getting off some nice short jabs and some good body shots. Mosley on the other hand had the stick and move down and ultimately he made the slightly swollen eye of Fernando Vargas his target and it paid off with a 10th round stoppage at the 1:22 mark by the referee Joe Cortez. On a side note it was mentioned that Vargas and Mosley had a $100,000 side bet on who would knock who out.

I was surprised but it was a good thing he did because you didn’t really see how much damage was done until the beginning of the tenth round. Vargas’ eye was shut completely but he wanted to continue. There were some undercards that had taken place prior to the main event.

In the Heavyweight (non-title) fight was Calvin Brock (27-0, 21 KOs) representing Charlotte, NC versus Zuri Lawrence (20-10-4) representing Poughkeepsie, NY. This was actually a good under-card. These 2 cats were one time sparring partners (shades of Vernon Forrest vs. Shane Mosley) at one time. These guys were equally good but Brock dropped Lawrence (and I do mean dropped him) with a left hook to the chin in the 6th round. See for yourself:

 OUCH!!!

End Result:

And old boy was laying there for at least 3-4 minutes COLD KNOCKED OUT!!!

I look forward to seeing bot of these guys again. Another under-card put

Jhonny Gonzalez (WBO Bantamweight Champion) 31-4, 27 KOs coming from Mexico City, Mexico versus Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson (Two-Time World Champion) 44-4, 28 KOs coming from Washington, DC.. This fight was supposed to be for the WBO Bantamweight Title but was switched to a non-title bout when “Too Sharp” didn’t make the required weight and was also fined $4500.00 because of it. Now I am probably going to make a few “Too Sharp” fan upset with my view of this one but he is from DC and we are critical about those sports figures that rep our hood. Ask any Redskin fan when they don’t perform correctly. Here I am looking at this fight and I am asking myself where have I heard “Too Sharp” at? He was boxing back when I was running the street and at that time he was arguably the most talented American flyweight in history, the proprietor of the “Too Sharp Barbershop” in Washington, D.C., won 39 consecutive contests at one juncture in his career and was listed near the top of many pound-for-pound lists.

In his prime, no one could touch the dazzling boxer-puncher. He was so feared that there was never a “marquee” fighter in or around his weight division willing to fight him. But here I was seeing what appeared to be only a shadow of what he once was. Now I am not saying he may not have had it but this particular fight did not show me that he had a chance of winning. I saw quite a few low shots from him while his apponent actually showed that youth was a factor in the fight. Gonzalez took a few rounds to figure out the crafty former two-time champion Johnson, but then things opened up in round four when Gonzalez dropped Johnson with a straight right. Gonzalez continued the pressure and dropped Johnson for the count at 1:08 of round eight.

One other under-cards had unbeaten welterweight star Joel Julio (27-0, 24 KOs) scoring an impressive second round TKO over Wilmer Mejia (11-11-1). Julio floored Mejia in both the first and second rounds, after which Mejia claimed a hand injury and the fight was stopped.

Overall I was not disappointed with what I saw. I had Vargas winning by decision. I thought he could possibly get a KO but Mosley did look good. It was sad that we could not get a full 12 rounder but I do hope they consider a rematch.

Before closing I have got to give a shout to my brother Heath for his support in this venture. Not forgetting the B5 Media family & Aaron for offering me the opportunity to partake in something I am actually enjoying. But my brother has really been a strong supporter and to know how proud he is of me makes this that much more special. I LOVE YOU BRO!!!!

Well I am out for a minute but I got much more coming so please stay tuned.
