Back in the 80’s when the WWE (then known as WWWF) had finally hit a high with viewership and was seen in every household. They had a vast aray of characters, one of them being Tatanka.

Chris Chavis “aka” Tatanka was born in Pembroke, N.C.; home of the Lumbee Native American Tribe. He is a former student of Bethel High School, Hampton, Va. 1975-1978. During his time in school he played footbal all 3 years and was voted most valuable lineman in 1977. He was also in the Army R.O.T.C.where he was promoted to the highest rank of Command Sargent Major in his Jr. year. In his Sr. year he was promoted to the highest rank of Colonel and recieved a scholarship to the West Point Academy.

He held the following titles in bodybuilding:

1983 1st place Mr Goldcoast.

1985 2nd place Citrus States.

1987 1st place First Coast Bodybuilding Championship

1988 1st place Mr. Gulf Coast

He tried out for the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins, and Oakland Raiders to pursue a career in football. Although he was offered a with the Miami Dolphins he opted not to take it because he was making more working at Bally’s gym. He left Bally’s (even though he was given rasies) in 1989 to pursue a career in professional wrestling and in January of 1990 turned pro. In 1991 he was signed to the WWE and had a terrific run (click here)

As a wrestler he spent 300 days per year on the road and in 1996 decided to take a break from the sport to spend time with his wife to get his personal realtionship in order. During that time he not only did he rebuild his realtionship with his wife but he also developed a relationship with GOD. During that time off his wife gave birth to a baby girl.

2 1/2 years later he stepped back into the squared circle and ultimately captured The South Africa Heavyweight Title, The U.C.W. Heavyweight Title, and The Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Title. In Setember of 1999 he also captured The

Heavyweight Champion for I.W.A. Championship Wrestling thus making his belt count 5.

He is working the independant circuts and making personal appearances. He is also involved with WXL (another wrestling promotion) based in South America. It is good to know he is still around.
