Jab and Grapple - Boxing and Wrestling News and Analysis

Brooklyn’s Finest (Yeah right)

by Sean on February 8th, 2006

Late last night I witnessed one of the most embarASSing moments in boxing. Not there has not been one before. But this was truly one of those you knew it was going to happen moments. The fight took place in New York at the theatre in Madison Square Garden. The fight was between Zab “Super” Judah vs.  Carlos Baldomir. This was supposed to be a fight that had Zab “Super” Judah as the winner. From what the commentators had talked about Zab had gone through so much pre-fight drama see Showtime Boxing  .

Zab Judah was finally coming home to New York and the word was he was not going to let the people that came to see him. Not from where I was. It started off with the “Touch gloves” part of the fight. The referee had spoke his peace and instructed the fighters to touch gloves. Zab instead felt it sportsman-like to try and cheap shot Carlos in his thigh. Instead it was the glove he hit (when you see the replay) because Carlos had his hand at his side.

Round one like most fights was about feeling out the boxers style. Okay that was cool. But the commentators were saying in order for Zab to win this fight he would have to end it in at least 3-4 rounds. They even said his father (who is his corner man) made the comment during an interview he would be astonished if the fight went past 3 rounds. Now I have never really been a Zab Judah fan because he lacks ring maturity and in some way reminded me of Mike Tyson in his early boxing years. I don’t know Zab “the person” but I am familiar with Zab “the boxer”. Now the fight was so-so until the 7th round when Zab got dat I dotted!!!

Here he was glazed over like a fresh donut trying his best not to eat canvas. He grabbed Carlos and held on to him 3-4 times and the ref had to tell him to stop but when Zab turned his back and ran around the ring to keep from getting dusted that was clearly one of the biggest insults to boxing fans that were watching the fight. He made it through the 7th round but had to have the ring doctor check him out. He passed. Rounds 8,9, & 10 belonged to Carlos because Zab was still glazed.

Ultimately Zab lost all of his titles and he is not in position for a rematch because it is not in the contract. During the post fight interviews Zab made the comment that “he had a F**ked up promoter.” He also said that Don King was no good and f**ked up. Well all you have to do is look at the lives and listen to the stories from any boxer that has had to deal with Don King and you know what you are getting into. Don’s last victim was Mike Tyson. He had true talent but lacked lots of maturity outside of the ring. And all Don cared about was the money he could make. Not the person making him the money. Look at Ali. He is an example of what having Don King handling your fights can bring.

Now I am sure there are many BROOKLYNITES that are not just angry but also embarassed of how Zab represented the burrough. I myself thought it was funny to hear him say he wasn’t blaming Don for his lost but he had enough breath to call hin F**ked up. Sounds like the ole finger pointing thing to me.

I think he should take the time to re-evaluate his place in boxing. Although he may have some skill he lacks maturity and that can hurt a boxer in the long run. There will be many fights for him to take but as long as his boxing maturity is not developed he will not be a true contender. Poor Zab.
